Neurodivergent Burnout Is More Than “Being Tired”

For many autistic and ADHD people, burnout can feel like hitting an invisible wall. Tasks that were once manageable suddenly feel impossible. Emotions become harder to regulate. Sensory tolerance drops. Even simple decisions feel overwhelming.

Neurodivergent burnout is not a lack of resilience - it is a physiological and emotional response to prolonged stress, masking, sensory overload and expectations that don’t align with how your brain functions. Research and lived experience consistently highlight that neurodivergent people use more energy to navigate everyday life, especially in environments that aren't designed with them in mind.

Why Does It Happen?

Burnout often develops gradually. Many people describe years of:

  • Masking or camouflaging to fit into social or work environments

  • Pushing through sensory overload

  • Meeting family or cultural expectations to “be capable”

  • Navigating workplaces without accommodations

  • High levels of emotional labour

  • Being misunderstood or dismissed

Eventually, the body says: “No more.”

For some, burnout looks like withdrawal or shutdown. For others, it brings irritability, depression, anxiety or feeling detached from the world. None of these responses mean you’re failing — they mean you’re overwhelmed.

Therapy Can Be a Space to Unmask and Recover

In therapy, we explore:

  • The patterns that have led to exhaustion

  • Where your energy is leaking

  • How cultural or family expectations may be shaping your coping strategies

  • What rest actually looks like for your neurotype

  • How to create boundaries that protect your wellbeing

  • Ways to live more authentically and sustainably

Recovery isn’t about “getting back to normal.” It’s about building a life that doesn’t chronically deplete you.

If You're Struggling, You Don’t Need To Navigate This Alone

Neurodivergent burnout is valid. Your exhaustion makes sense. And with the right support, recovery is not only possible — it can be deeply transformative.
